Wakkerstroom is situated in a beautiful valley, 27kms from the town of Volksrust. It lies at an altitude of 1760m. Newcastle and Piet Retief are the closest big towns, both 80km away.

The birding town of Wakkerstroom

Relax in the tranquil surroundings of Wakkerstroom, mostly known for it’s world-renowned wetland, but also for it’s peacefulness and beauty, nestled in a valley of rolling hills and dams.
Wakkerstroom is a 2.5 - 3 hour drive from JHB (appox 280km), 80km from Newcastle and Piet Retief... (see below for directions from JHB)

Directions

Directions from JHB: Take the N3 to Durban, pass through Heidelberg, and take the Standerton/Balfour turn off (just before the first toll gate, and just after the first toll sign!). At the highway intersection, turn left towards Standerton. Standerton (this is approximately 80km away). At Standerton, follow signs for the R23, this will take you to Volksrus (another 80km or so). At Volksrus, follow signs to Wakkerstroom, approximately 27km from there...
